LDHA encodes the L-lactate dehydrogenase A chain, a homotetrameric enzyme that catalyzes the anaerobic conversion of pyruvate to L-lactate with concomitant nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) regeneration. This terminal glycolytic reaction constitutes the major pathway for metabolic flux during ischemia, sepsis, or other states of tissue oxygen debt.
