Serum amyloid A (SAA) is a 104 amino acid polypeptide which in its native state has a molecular mass between 12-14 kDa. It is also a precursor of amyloid A (AA) protein (approx. 8.5 kDa) that can be produced following the cleavage of the first 76 amino acids. The gene is found to be located on chromosome 11p and the human protein can exist in a number of polymorphic forms (SAA1 to SAA4).
