TFAM is described as a one of the core mitochondrial transcription factors. It plays an important role in the recruitment of mitochondrial RNA polymerase and the T2BM transcription factor to initial and activate the transcription process. One of the main roles is to coat and pack mtDNA into nucleoids by forming a U-turn on the mtDNA and creating cross strand interactions.
