Osteocalcin is an abundant noncollagenous bone matrix protein secreted by osteoblasts during bone formation. Through vitamin K-dependent γ-carboxylation of specific glutamic acid residues, osteocalcin binds hydroxyapatite with high affinity, comprising 10-20% of the total bone protein matrix.
