First Aid at Work Requalification

Introduction It is a requirement of Health & Safety law that employers should ensure the health and safety and welfare of their employees and the public. Employers must also provide adequate personnel, training and equipment to render first aid to their employees. The First Aid at Work qualification is valid for a period of three years at which point a requalification course must be taken. The HSE regulations state that all delegates undertaking this course must be in possession of their First Aid at Work qualification. It must not have expired beyond 28 days of the expiry date as shown on their First Aid at Work Certificate. If the certificate has expired beyond the 28 day period then it will be necessary for the delegate to attend a full 3-day First Aid at Work course. Where first-aiders retrain during the three months before the certificate expires, the new certificate should take effect from the expiry date and last for three years from this date. Where retraining is earlier than this three-month period, the new certificate should take effect from the date the course is completed and last for three years from this date. Where first-aiders do not complete their retraining before the expiry date, they should complete it no more than 28 days beyond the expiry date. The new certificate should be dated from the expiry date of the previous certificate and last for three years from this date. The 28-day certificate extension can be applied irrespective of the circumstances which led the first-aider to go beyond their certificate expiry date before requalifying. If a first-aider cannot complete the training by the end of this 28-day period they will not be allowed onto an FAW requalification Subjects covered include The Role and Responsibility of a First Aider Assessing an Incident Managing an Unresponsive Casualty who is Breathing Normally Managing an Unresponsive Casualty who is not Breathing Normally Recognise and Assist a Casualty who is Choking Managing a Casualty who is Wounded and Bleeding Managing a Casualty who is in Shock Managing a Casualty with a Minor Injury Administer First Aid for a range of conditions Managing a Casualty for a range of major illnesses Entry Guidance Candidates who are not in possession of a current 3 Day First Aid at Work certificate or whose current 3 Day First Aid at Work certificate is not due to expire for four months or longer will not be allowed to attend this course.
