Your Plastic Water Bottle could have more Germs than a Dog Bowl

22-05-2017

New research has indicated that slugging water from the same refillable plastic water bottle can leave you exposed to dangerous germs like E.coli. Some of the water bottles tested contained more harmful bacteria than a toy, toilet seat, or even a dog bowl. With many people making New Year’s resolutions to get fit and healthy, it is important to consider the threat of germs and nasty microbes that you may encounter at a gym. Whilst many gym-goers feel they are helping the environment by re-filling their plastic water bottles after a work-out, they are unwittingly exposing themselves to harmful bacteria that could make you sick. Tests carried out on four different types of popular re-fillable water bottles found that each type of bottle harboured harmful types of bacteria such as salmonella and E.coli, with thousands of bacteria crawling all over the spout and cap of the bottle. Salmonella and E.coli are known as gram negative rods and are the most harmful type of bacteria. Tests conducted by TreadmillReviews.net showed that slide-top versions of water bottles had the highest germ concentration, with more than 900,000 colony forming units on average. This means that your reusable water bottle could be harbouring over three times more colony-forming germ units than a dog bowl. These slide-top water bottles also contained high levels of gram-positive cocci, which are bacteria that are closely linked to pneumonia, skin infections and even blood poisoning.
